Poetic progress for Arts and Media students

12First year students from our Creative Writing and Graphic Design courses have collaborated on an exciting project to produce a series of works in a ‘Typographic Haiku Collaborative Experiments’  exhibition.

Our first year BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing students were asked to create a haiku; a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. These were then passed to our BA (Hons) Graphic Design students, who were asked to produce a series of experimental typefaces that conceptually reflected the content of their given poem. The final task was to demonstrate how successfully their newly crafted letterforms displayed their respective poem, in poster form. read more

Chortle Comedy Awards: Salford win again!

The 2015 Chortle Comedy Awards took place at Jongleurs in Camden, where the crème de la crème of the comedy world came together to celebrate the achievements of fellow comedians including those new to the scene.

The Annual Chortle Comedy Awards celebrates the best in live comedy, awarded by a panel of judges and an online public vote at Chortle.co.uk.

A number of University of Salford graduates took the comedy world by storm at the awards, winning the ‘Best Newcomer’ category.

UntitledA Graduate has praised journalism teaching at the University of Salford after winning a national award by scoring the highest ever mark in a prestigious industry exam.

Katie Dickinson graduated from the University’s MA Journalism programme in 2013 and secured a job as a reporter at The Westmorland Gazette in Cumbria.

After completing 18 months as a trainee with the newspaper, she has now become a senior reporter by passing the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ (NCTJ) NQJ exam – scoring a record 91 per cent in her media law and practice paper. read more

Untitled-2Held at Blackdog Ballroom NWS last week, the nautical themed #GoodShipSalford was a student led showcase event that offered the chance for established industry professionals to view the portfolios of our BA (Hons) Graphic Design graduating class.

As well as showcasing their work, the event gave the graduating design crew the opportunity to sell themselves and expand their network within the creative industry. An armada of agencies (see what we did there?) from across the Manchester region attended to witness the students’ hard work, blood, sweat and tears. read more
