Salford Business Submarine made its second appearance on Sunday 8th May 2016, entering the team’s second ever Salford Dragon Boat Festival.

The team competed for the first time in 2015, where their main aim was to keep out of the water and to make it to the end of the course. Having easily achieved their 2015 target the team set their sights higher for 2016. This year, we wanted to raise even more money for Kidscan – a Children’s Cancer Research charity – and of course we were aiming not just to keep out of the water, but also to win a race! Have we been able to achieve our ambition this year?

Most importantly the team were rowing to raise funds for Kidscan. Cancer is the leading cause of death in children in the UK; 25% of children diagnosed with cancer won’t make it to their 30th birthday. Through groundbreaking research, Kidscan is striving to change that, giving every child with cancer the treatment they need to survive.

For all #ClassOf2016 final year undergraduate students, Semester 2 of the final year here at Salford Business School is now underway! This week, to mark your time with the School and in anticipation of Graduation, we are taking class photos. Class photos were taken for the first time in 2015 with our Law students and proved a real success, so this year we will be taking photos across all programmes – it would be fantastic if we could get a full house!

The photoshoots are all taking place on the Peel Park campus, and your Programme Director will take you from class when it is time for your session. Claire Angel, our Student Progression Assistant, (who was a photographer in an earlier life!) is manning the camera, and staff from the School are on hand to make sure it all runs smoothly.

Salford Business School will be providing you all with an actual print for your wall, as well as a digital copy, as a memento of your time with us.

How realistic is #TheApprentice boardroom?

Now in its 11th series, The Apprentice is back with its winning “you’ve been fired” format. This season has seen the notable substitution of the oft-puzzled look of Nick Hewer with the stern face of Claude Littner as Lord Sugar’s male confidant. Karen Brady remains as Sugar’s other sidekick.

But just how realistic is this portrayal of the boardroom? Is it as daunting, fearful and terrifying in real life?

Famous for his excoriating one-liners, Sugar could be described as being a little too direct at times. He has berated contestants for going from “anchor to wanker” and said: “I hear your enthusiasm, you know? Great enthusiasm. A fly’s got enthusiasm but it doesn’t stop headbutting the window.”

Is Lord Sugar right: is it better to be feared than loved as a boss?
