The Careers and Enterprise Team have been very busy over the past year working to create Launch @SalfordUni, the new business incubator service at the university and it’s finally here and in use!
Launch is located in the Maxwell Building on the 3rd floor and is almost unrecognisable from the old meeting rooms that were here before. It is now home to 16 student and graduate ran start-up businesses for the next 6 months. The space offers the business owners a hot-desking area to run their business as well as a range of meeting rooms and networking space. The movable walls make the site perfect for new businesses who need a versatile and flexible space to make their business ideas a reality.
However, the Launch@SalfordUni incubator also offers the businesses a wide range of support to make the venture of creating a business less daunting. With multiple businesses in the same position Launch @SalfordUni is as much about office space as it is about creating valuable connections that can make starting a new business that little bit easier. In partnership with the Business Growth Hub we offer a 6 month support programme including workshops on specific aspects of building a business as well as mentorship from experienced professionals. Not only that but the cohort get access to drop in sessions from academic staff from Salford Business School and some highly regarded entrepreneurs. We also have funding available for our entrepreneurs and are working closely with our partners Santander Universities UK, The Landing and Islington Mill to connect our cohort to the local business community.
Andy Burnham who opened the space said “This answers a real need in the regional economy, that is start up space for young entrepreneurs. It is often difficult when you are trying to launch a new business, you need funding and accommodation. This sends a message that students can aspire to run their own business when they graduate.”
We’ve also had positive feedback from our current cohort. Here’s what they had to say:
“They make business fun, I really believe in it now. Planning it out each week I become more confident and realise it’s doable and has the potential to be very successful”- Nicole Lane, Project: Trinity
“We are given a safe and relaxed environment, in order for our business ideas to prosper and become reality. Really enjoyable”- Darren Cain, Book 4 Events
We are very excited to see what these businesses will do with their new home over the next 6 months and we are sure to have some amazing success stories to share.
The Enterprise Team also run a series of Enterprise Masterclasses and Business Bootcamps, all sessions you can get involved in now. We also have funding for your business ideas through our Santander Start Up Awards. If you have a business idea and would like to get support from the Enterprise Team, you can reach us at firstname.lastname@example.org and find out how you can get involved on the Enterprise Website.
