What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Diabetes for Student Nurses learning pack
Weekly timetable will be completed by mentor
On longer placements we have a ‘Living With Diabetes’ project with a reflective piece submitted by the student
We will help with arranging appropriate spoke placements with District Nurses, Practice Nurses, Foot and Eye Screening Team, Diabetes Ward – C4
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
We are a small team and have a limited number of mentors
The other DSN’s will act as associate mentors

Our core hours are 08.30 – 16.30 Monday to Friday but we do a couple of late clinics which you will be expected to participate in.
These usually finish at around 18.00 – 18.30. We will arrange for a late start or an early finish to ensure working hours are correct each week when you sit in these clinics.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
The Diabetes Centre is a purpose built building off the hospital site – Chorley Street Bolton BL1 4AL, but we do also work at the Royal Bolton Hospital each day and we occasionally do home visits or reviews in intermediate care setting at Darley Court
We are a very specialist area seeing just a fraction of the diabetes population – largely those requiring injectable treatment or those who have severe diabetes complications
Specialist Clinics we offer are as follows:-
New patient assessment (medical)
Urgent patient assessments (nurse) including pre-op patients, post discharge patients and other urgent problems
MDT Antenatal care – both for gestational diabetes and established Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes
Specialist dietary assessment
Carbohydrate counting groups
MDT Adolescent diabetes clinic
MDT Foot clinic
Specialist Podiatry care
Specialist insoles and footwear
MDT Insulin pump clinics
MDT Neuropathic pain clinic
We deliver patient and staff education
We cover RBH ward referrals every morning Monday – Friday
We will expect that you will also work a small amount of time with district nurse teams and practice nurses to see the full spectrum of diabetes care
You will also sit in on patient education sessions and observe what newly diagnosed patients are taught
What nursing model is used for planning care?
We use an holistic MDT approach to diabetes care
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Blood glucose monitoring, weights, height, BMI, BP, patient assessment, injection technique/sites and safety, urine ketone testing, blood ketone testing
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Variable rate IV insulin infusions, insulin pumps, visual acuity testing, administration of eye drops for screening, foot screening, dietary review/advice
What resources are available to help students learning?
Large MDT from which to gain knowledge – Nurses/ HCA/ Consultants/ Registrars/ Podiatry/ Specialist dietitians/ Clinical psychologist/ Orthotics and footwear/ Screening teams/ District Nurses and Practice Nurses/ Diabetic Ward – B2
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Take part in National Diabetes Inpatient Audit each year
