About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
An overview of the placement will be sent via email when the student initially contacts us, so please leave your email address. A named mentor: student welcome pack; orientation; selection of spoke placements
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
The mentor will endeavour to work with the student for 40% of the time during the placement. All staff within team will support the student.
There is not a sign off assessor within the team.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Days: 9am-5pm
Notes: Wear smart clothing. Trousers; knee length skirts/dresses; flat or small heel shoe; warm waterproof outdoor coats
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Home visits; clinics; multiagency meetings; telephone calls
Clients: antenatal to preschool / all social classes /ethnic minorities-migrants/refugees/ foster families /newly adopted/ domestic violence/child abuse/substance abuse/send families
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Models used: healthy child program; framework for action; 8 stage model-(starting together)
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Communication (written and oral); observation; assessment; numeracy; data collection
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Collaborative working with families and multidiscipline team
child protection / court /conference report writing
Prescribing; bmi; haemacue;

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Opportunities to research on line and within spoke placements

These are varied and the student will arrange these to accomplish competencies or if they have a particular area of interest. Examples of spoke placements:
