About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be expected to shadow a member of qualified staff for at least 2 weeks dependant of year of training, and be assessed as competent by assessor before working without close supervision.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be able assigned a mentor/assessor.

Monday and Thursday: 8.30am – 6.30pm
Tuesday: 8.30am – 5.30pm
Wednesday and Friday: 8.30am – 1.30pm
With some flexability to attend evening sessions in the community reproductive clinics.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Caring for patients with gonorrhoea, chlamydia, genital warts, genital herpes, sexual dysfunction, HIV, vytology and colposcopy;
- Family planning
- Health advising
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Neumans systems nursing model.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Assisting doctor/nurse with obtaining specimens, venepuncture, visit cytology lab, visit community clinics.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Venepuncture, assisting with obtaining cervical/urethral/rectal/vulval/throat specimens, assisting with vulval and penile biopsies, IM injections for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B, named patient IM treatment for syphilis.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Student teaching packs are available, clinics own library, internet access.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Medical research clinical trials
HIV – various studies undertaken, e.g. Stop It study, lypodystrophy study, Audit of practice and evaluation

Nursing Philosophy
The Nursing Philosophy of the Genito-Urinary Medicine Department is to provide a confidential and supportive environment for patients. Patients and relatives and friends will be treated as individuals. Health and personal education is provided to enable patients to take control over, and improve their health and wellbeing. Each member of staff possesses counselling skills, and a counselling service is available. Our aim is to assist each individual to reach their maximum wellbeing. Care will be planned in an empathetic and non-judgemental manner, using a model of nursing.
Staff will be involved in an ongoing program of learning and staff development.
For the aims to be achieved there will be a move towards developing Primary Nursing and integrated services.
