What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Welcome pack, sign off and associate mentor, off duty, time to complete initial meeting including learning objectives.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Attendance at yearly educational updates, familiar with student paperwork, mentors help students to achieve learning objectives whether with own team or through spokes, safeguarding training

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

8:00am-4:00pm

Late:

12:00pm-8:00pm

Night:

Weekends only at student request.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

wound care, respiratory assessments, blood clinic, eczema, constipation, removal of sutures, BP monitoring, SpO2 monitoring, caring for child with complex needs, continence assessments, bed assessments, health promotion, teaching, acutely unwell patients requiring emergency attention (unplanned), enteral feeding, ventilation, burn care, tracheostomy/NG tube/gastrostomy care

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney (activities of daily living)

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Handwashing, obtaining clinical observations, risk management, health & safety

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication, IT, documentation, passing NG tube, wound assessment, care of child on home oxygen, removal of sutures, examination and assessment of unwell child, fluid management.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Spectrum teaching sessions, learning packs, trust library, placement related articles, guidelines/pathways devised by team, NICE guidelines, local and national guidelines.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Local protocols and guidelines, clinics, specialist practitioner course, nurse prescribing, safeguarding training.
