About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

You will be orientatated to the department on the first day of your placement, have your induction completed and be introduced to the team.

An initial meeting will take place with your allocated mentor within your first week where your learning objectives for the placement can be discussed and a plan of how to meet these can be decided.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

You will be assigned a mentor for the duration of your placement that your shift pattern will be based around. You will also have the opportunity to work with all members of the multidisciplinary team.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Patient’s attend our department for multiple reasons, whether they require contraception, a cervical smear, a sexual health screen or maybe have some symptoms/concerns they are worried about. We fit contraceptive implants and coils within our department and can offer testing for infections such as gonorrhoea, chlamydia, HIV, syphilis, herpes, urethritis and trichomonas vaginalis. Some of these can be diagnosed by microscopy carried out within the department and some testing is carried out in the lab at Bolton. Patients are usually offered treatment within the department if required.

We aim to provide confidential and non-judgemental care to all patients maintaining the patient’s dignity at all times.
