About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Placement orientation on first day
Working with experienced Mentors
3 weeks working within the ANP team caring for patients presenting for same day consultation
3 weeks working with Practice Nurses caring for patient’s who are diagnosed with chronic disease
Exposure to multi-disciplinary working (MSK Practitioner, Mental Health Practitioner, Health Improvement Officer, Pharmacist.
Exposure to caring for patient’s within a residential home setting
Performing health checks for carers and patient’s who are diagnosed with learning disabilities.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
We have six qualified Mentors who are working in clinical practice and three Associate Mentors who have recently attended a Mentor update provided by Bolton University.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shift Notes:
Student’s may work 0800-1600 Monday to Friday or work 3 x 0800-1830 ( 10hrs) and 1 x 0800-1600hrs (7.5hrs) per week and have one day off during the week
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
We care for all patients who present to general practice with the following;
chronic conditions, acute on chronic exacerbations of illness , minor injuries, same day consultation, baby immunisations, cervical screening, travel vaccinations, health screening, emergency presentations that walk in to surgery, mental health problems, MSK injuries/ problems.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
As ANP’s, we use Morton’s PQRST Symptom Analysis Tool to structure the history taking process
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
To be able to record base line observations accurately
To be able to provide wound care using ANTT procedures
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
To observe venepuncture
To be able to record a 12 lead ECG
To observe Spirometry
What resources are available to help students learning?
Student’s will have access to IT facilities via the conference room and also have access to books and clinical journals. Student’s will also be able to access the Bridge Conference Centre for Practice Nurse updates on a monthly basis.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
All care that we provide at Harwood Group Practice is evidence based formulated on NICE Guidance and local, current guidelines. We actively encourage students to challenge clinical practice and generate new ideas to improve existing practice.
Spoke Placements
We have several spoke attachments available at Harwood Group Practice these include ;
Pharmacy, attend meetings at Bolton CCG with Dr Jane Bradford (Safeguarding Lead at Bolton CCG), MSK Practitioner, Mental Health Practitioner, Residential Care Home, work with GP, ANP’s, Practice Nurses on a daily basis, work alongside Health Improvement Officer.
