About this placement
Prior to placement
The Centre will need to take a copy of your Disclosure and Barring Service certificate and photo ID (passport, driving licence etc)
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
• Welcome booklet (this can be shared prior to placement when you make contact with your allocated assessor)
• Introduction to staff & environment
• Introduction to Assessor and Supervisors
• Security Awareness. A security induction around the site can be arranged.
• Orientation to the home/ local induction including key induction
• Fire Regulations
• Health & Safety Policies
• Discussion around learning opportunities
You will also be required to completed 2 days of e-learning at the very start of placement to prepare you for this unique experience
What are the arrangements for assessors/ supervisors?
A number of assessors and supervisors identified in learner information file/ in welcome booklet. Assessor to be allocated prior to placement commencing where possible. All assessors and supervisors have access to training on NMC SSSA standards.
You will work most days with the RMN’s on the team, one of which will be with your assessor. There are other members of the multi-disciplinary team for you to work with for exposure to other ways of working.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Monday- Friday 9 am – 5pm
(The team cover core office hours of 09:00 till 17:00 Monday to Friday. There is an on-call system for weekends and bank holidays; students would not be expected to work on-call)
Patient Care Situations
Opportunities to observe and participate in the assessment and treatment for young people aged eleven to eighteen in a custodial setting. The young people at Barton Moss can present with multiple, complex emotional and neurodevelopmental needs.
The service is trauma-informed following the SECURE Stairs framework; a strategy to collaboratively work with young people, their families, and professionals.
Students will be able to:
• Observe and engage in a multitude of assessments completed by the teams’ nurses, Speech and Language therapist, Occupational Therapist, and Clinical Psychologists.
• Observe and engage in direct work with select young people as and when appropriate supported by the team RMNs.
• Observe and engage in the delivery of clinical supervision and training with the residential team, who are responsible for the day-to-day care of the young people.
• Observe and engage in team formulation, to understand a young person’s needs.
• Observe and engage in the delivery of adult/paediatric nursing skills; height/weight, immunisations, asthma care, sexual health, skin integrity, optician clinics, and dental clinics.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The philosophy of care is young person focused; specific to their needs based on culture, background, and gender. It would be useful for students to research the PACE model of care before arriving on placement.
Core Clinical Skills
As part of the In-Reach team, learners will be encouraged to develop a collaborative approach, placing the Healthcare needs of the young people at the centre of planning care. The aim of the team is to ensure that young people are given the highest standard of care, which is non-judgemental, young person centred & evidence based.
Additional Clinical Skills
Planning and evaluation of care.
• Assessment, formulation, and management of clinical risks.
• Observation and eventually delivery of information in multi-disciplinary reviews.
• Collaboration and co-production of direct work with young people.
• Delivery of therapeutic skills informed by compassion focused therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Learning Resources
Students will have unique access to a varied skill-mix of experienced and highly specialist professionals within the team and wider home environment.
Health and Justice based e-Learning to be completed prior to placement; there will also be opportunities for bespoke sessions based on the students’ needs and interests.
Students will also be supported to access GMMH provided CPD and the Recovery Academy.

• Development & implementation of the Clinical Governance Framework Compliance with NSF & NICE guidelines

Spoke Placements
Specific clinical skills cannot be learned at Barton Moss i.e. depots, moving and handling – we would encourage students to contact other teams to arrange spoke visits.
Students will be expected to spend one week at Marydale Lodge Secure Children’s Home in St. Helens; depending on travel arrangements for exposure and insight into how care is delivered within a secure welfare setting.
Students may also visit from spoke placements within the adult secure estate (St. Josephs Approved Premises Healthcare Team, HMP Manchester Health Team, HMP Forest Bank Health Team etc)
