Mentor named either in induction pack or on first day of placement. Interviews organised at initial meeting.

As mentor (op area) 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday Also ward shifts available, can be arranged for Pre and Post Op Care for Breast Patients.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Wide Variety:

  • Assessment – Pre-assessment, 2 week rule,
  • Follow-up Clinics, Results clinics, Nurse Led clinics
  • Family History clinics, Theatres, Breast Care Nurses, Multi-Disciplinary Meeting
  • Diagnostics – Ultrasound scans, Biopsies, Mammotomoes and Nuclear Medicine
  • Screening – MammogramsOncology – visit to Churchill Unit
  • Psychological support
  • Prosthetic fitting
  • Ward – M1, DCU and F4 (Male Patients)
  • Most aspects of Cancer journey

What nursing model is used for planning care?

No formal model in place but care based on patients individual support and information needs.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Mainly related to communication. Support during clinical examination and procedures, wound care – Tissue Viability, Seromas and Inflations.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Opportunities for additional and further learning, e.g. Oncology Unit, Pathology Unit

What resources are available to help students learning?

  • A variety of literature in Student Learning Zone
  • Time spent with various personnel
  • Visits to allied areas.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Macmillian telephone project for BCN follow up.

Reconstruction research; Psychological impact of same;

Expansion of lymphoedema service, Research on various Drugs and Trials
