About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be allocated a Practice Assessor and Supervisor prior to/on the first day of placement and will have shifts provided in advance. There is a student welcome pack available.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student will be allocated a Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor prior to/on the first day of placement.

The Unit opens Monday – Friday 08:00 – 18:30. Shifts vary between these times to accommodate learning experiences but your off duty can be negotiated to fit in with your needs.Each week your student allocation/off duty will be planned together with staff allocation and off duty by your Mentor.
These all get displayed around the units notice boards in the reception office, nurses’s office and recovery area.

Philosophy for Urology Patient Care
The philosophy will be to assess the individual requirements of each patient /client and to implement the appropriate evidence based care whilst maintaining safety. Each patient is an individual with different cultural, racial and religious beliefs that should be respected.
The belief of the staff within this department is to maximise the patient/client Urological wellbeing and encouraging them to take their place in society, taking into consideration the physical and psychosocial needs of each individual.
The staff believe that they are responsible for providing support required by relatives and significant others. Responsible in promoting good communication within the department and with other members of the MDT.
This department believes it has an educational role in facilitating learning, by providing a suitable environment, which fosters inter-personal relationships and correct professional attitudes and a healthy exchange of ideas.
Patient will be made aware when students and other staff in learning roles are to be involved in their care and are given the right to refuse student /trainee involvement.
Urology Practice Placement Philosophy
The department aims to provide a productive teaching and learning environment for students. This is seen as important to all of our staff within the urology unit. The urology and multidisciplinary teams aim to provide a knowledgeable source of evidence-based information. Supported by a collection of multimedia resources that are easily accessible for their use.
Every student nurse will be exposed to a variety of pathways of care and treatments that patients experience whilst visiting the urology dept. We advocate problem-based learning and acknowledge that our students are adult learners and valuable members of our team.
All students will have supernumerary status whilst on placement, allowing occasion for utilising all resources. As a specialised unit, students are supervised but encouraged to ask questions and participate in patients? individual care.
Our mentors and associate mentors are there to facilitate the students learning and will use their experience to assist and direct them. They will help to establish a plan of action and collate evidence to meet their objectives. 11/04/2007
