What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be allocated a Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor, prior to arrival. A ward induction takes place on arrival to ward.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30-15.15hrs
Late:
12.15-20.00hrs
Night:
19.30-08.00hrs
Shift Notes:
Long Days – 07.30-20.00hrs
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care of children with a variety of health problems – medical, surgical (including orthopaedic, ENT, dental and general surgery), caring for children with compelx needs and care of the critically ill child.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Adapted Roper, Logan and Tierney Activities of Living model.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
CommunicationObservations including use of the early warning scoring systemAdministration of medicines including drug calculations Assisting with preparation of/and clinical investigations Basic cares

What resources are available to help students learning?
There is an education centre on site with facilities to research databases and journals and librarians resident for advice on using facilities.There are limited resources available on the ward although there are link nurses with responsibilities such as diabetes, asthma, infection control, HDU, breast feeding etc who arrange teaching sessions for students.There are also many spoke placements available to aid learning such as children’s A&E, Community Nursing Team, Neonatal Unit.

Philosophy of the Child Health Directorate The Child Health Directorate aims to provide full and efficient service to meet the health needs of children in Bolton and neighbouring districts. The care we deliver provides for the child as a whole in recognition of your child’s complete physical and emotional well-being.
