What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Ward C3 – Student Welcome Pack

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Each Student will be allocated a mentor, we are currently looking at improvements to help develop our students and the practice education team are helping our staff with this.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

7:30 am – 3:30 pm

Late:

1:00pm – 9:00pm

Night:

8:45pm – 07:45 am

Shift Notes:

Students will be allocated their shifts and any changes or difficulties in the working patterns must be discussed with the nurse in charge.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

There are a variety of patient care situations in this placement such as looking after patients with a variety of gastro illnesses such as Chrones, Colitis, IBS, all different types of Liver Disease and Pancreatic Diseases.

We also have patients that become actually unwell therefore acute illness management can be learnt under supervision as well as nursing those with chronic health problems.

Other medical problems can be learnt along with this as out patients tend to have many health problems.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Medication Management
  • Basic nursing care such as attending to hygiene needs, toileting, feeding
  • Undertaking wound care management and dressings, using the EWS scores and monitoring core observations.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

NG Tube placements and looking a various types of entral feeding Looking at TPN feeding via Central Venous Access Routes IV therapy theory and ANTT Cauterisation Undertaking ECGS. Looking at Alcohol withdrawal and managing patients that are on detoxing medication and check listing patients that are going for procedures.

What resources are available to help students learning?

There is literature on the ward available for students to look at.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

We will be starting exemplar ward soon and looking at releasing time to patient care. We undertake Audits regularly as part of clinical governance.

Liver Nurse, Alcohol Team/Nurse, IBS Specialist Nurses/Nurse Consultants, Endoscopy, Bereavement Team.
