What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients undergoing colo-rectal surgery – includes patients with inflammatory bowel disease and cancer who require formation of a stoma and patients undergoing general surgery, i.e. hernia repair, cholocystectomy.
Also upper GI patients eg Gastrectomy for Cancer
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney’s Activities of Daily Living. Individualised patient care is provided within a team nursing framework.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Pre- and post-operative Care
- Pain management
- Wound care
- Nutritional Assessment and Care.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Care of patient requiring total parenteral nutrition
- Adapting to life with a stoma
- Management of open abdominal wounds
- Fistulae
- Naso-gastric tube feeding
- PEG tube feeding.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Development of early warning system which involves scoring patients according to vital signs and other assessment criteria to alert of potential deterioration and enable earlier intervention.

Nursing Philosophy
Caring is the major focus of nursing within the directorate of general surgery. By using a recognised nursing model and the process of nursing, the appropriately trained qualified and unqualified staff aim to fill the self care deficits within a patient’s daily living activities, brought on by ill health.
All relevant aspects of hospital care will be explained and, whenever possible, promotion of health will be emphasised. Every patient, and where appropriate their significant other(s) will be involved in decisions regarding discharge arrangements. When appropriate, we will assist in achieving a dignified, peaceful and pain free death. This will be done with respect for and regardless of age, race, culture, gender, sexuality or social status.
Staff of all grades will be encouraged to develop their professional skills, and are accountable for the nursing care that they give in accordance with the UKCC code of professional conduct.
