7.00am – 2.50pm

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients undergoing:
- Gastroscopy, colonoscopy
- Staging laporoscopy
- ERCP Cholecystectomy (open/laporoscopic)
- Cardio-oesophagectomy
- Total/partial gastrectomy
- Fundoplication
- Vascular
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney’s Activities of Living Model.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Early warning scoring/recording of observations
- Patient care (pre and post op)
- Surgical pts
- Safe medicine administration
- Aseptic techniques
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Care of patients having TPN Jejunoscopy/gastronomony feeding
- Care of feeding tubes
- Monitoring of patients undergoing major surgery using early warning score.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Students will have opportunities to spend time with other members of the MDT, e.g.
- Pain nurse
- Stoma nurse
- Time in theatre with physios OT

Additional Information
Caring is the major focus of nursing within the general Surgical Directorate. By using a recognised model and the process of nursing, both qualified and unqualified staff aim to fill the self-care deficits within a patient’s daily living activities, brought on by ill health.
