What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Assessors and Associate Mentors are allocated prior to placement or on students arrival to the Ward.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.00 – 15.00 with 1/2 hour break
Late:
13.00 – 21.00 with 1/2 hour unpaid break as per Trust policy.
Night:
20.30 – 07.30
Shift Notes:
In line with University instructions we prefer students not to work long days. If you have any queries with your shifts please discuss with your Mentor. Long day shifts are optional for students. If you are going to be late or are sick, you must contact the ward at the first opportunity.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
The students are involved in pre and postoperative care for patients undergoing joint replacements, arthrodesis, arthroscopes and other elective orthopaedic surgery.

- Aseptic technique for wounds
- Dressing application
- Insertion/removal of urinary catheters
- Care of venflon sites and intravenous infusions
- Removal of sutures/clip
- Removal of wound drains
- Observations for the pre and post of patients
- Use of Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
- Epidurals
- Discharge planning
- Admission process and Care Plan
- Moving and Handling techniques
- Early warning score
- Risk assessments
- Safe medicine administration

Care of patients undergoing joint replacement surgery.
