What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Allocated a main mentor and a support Registrant. Due to the nature of the unit being spread across different floors/wards, the student follows their mentor to their allocated work area for that particular shift. It will be indicated on the off duty.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
Late:
Night:
1900-0730 (1 hour break)
Shift Notes:
Long Days- 0700-1930 (2×30 min breaks)
Short shifts can be agreed with your mentor or PEL
If students need to undertake nights during this allocation, please inform the PELs as soon as possible. Students will be expected to work weekends during this placement
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Elective pre-operative and post-operative care of a variety of surgical conditions. Care of patients admitted as emergency cases with conditions which may result in surgery.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper; Logan and Tierney. Selection of pathways utilised for day case surgery.

- ANTT
- Urinary Catheter Care Pre and post operative care

- Care of PEG/RIG feeding system
- Care of Tracheostomies

Ward Philosophy
Caring is a major focus of nursing within the ward. By using a recognised Model of Nursing and the Nursing Process, the appropriately trained qualified and unqualified staff aim to fill the self deficits within a patients daily living activities, brought on by ill health.
All relevant aspects of hospital care will be explained to ensure informed consent is obtained and a duty of care is achieved.
Whenever possible promotion of health will be emphasised. Where death is the expected outcome, we will endeavour to ensure that it is dignified, peaceful and pain free.
All care will be delivered with respect and regardless of age, race, culture, gender, sexuality or social status.
