About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

This placement is now part of the Synergy Project commencing September 2017.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentors are allocated to students prior to commencement and this will be documented on the off-duties. Students can phone the ward and will be given the mentors name and their off-duty.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07:30am – 03:00pm

Late:

1.00pm – 9.20pm

Night:

20:45 -07:45am

Shift Notes:

Shift patterns are at the discretion of the placement manager/ Practice educational lead for each placement and will depend on the needs of the placement to enable effective student support using the Synergy approach.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

You will be given every opportunity to experience the full 24hr care of our ladies, from pre-operative, admission, surgery and discharge. We are an acute surgical ward and take emergencies 24hrs/7 days a week and again you will be encouraged to be actively involved in all aspects of their care.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, logan and Tierney and Orems self care.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Total patient care- The assessment,planning, implementing and evaluation of all aspects of care.
  • Medicine management
  • Infection control
  • Ward management

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Students are encouraged to identify their own learning needs and we will support all learning. If however we are unable to provide the students identified learning needs, we will know someone who will.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Staff members of all grades and experience. Student area with some relevant literature/books.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Spoke Placements

Womens health care unit. M6/early pregnancy unit. Breast unit Theatres.
