What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentor/assessor allocated prior to commencement of studentOff duty will be done to accommodate, where possible, mentor/assessor working with student, and at times when this is not possible, arrangements will be made for other qualified staff to over see student.

Shift patterns – Unit is open 8 – 8 Monday to Friday and may be extended to include Saturday 8 – 8.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care situations available are:
- Patients attending for Pre-assessment and booked admissions
- Patients attending for surgery – Cardioversions and pain procedures, Orthopaedic, Oral Surgery, Gynaecology, General surgery, plastics, ENT and minor operations
- Total patient care from admission to discharge
- Care in the anaesthetic room
- Theatre practice
- Recovery
- Patients attending for Pain Management
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Orem’s Self Care Model, modified to suit the individual need of the patient.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Medication/administration oral, topical, eye/ear/nasal drops, injection technique, giving of suppositories
- Routine ward testing of urine and pregnancy testing
- Handwashing
- Aseptic and clean technique
- Observations – Temperature, pulse, respirations, skin, BP, limb, colour/pulses
- Moving and Handling
- Care of infusion/cannula, IVI therapy
- Post operative wound care
- Oral care
- Oxygen therapy

Philosophy of Care
A patient stated that Day Care is "A stride into the future with patients in mind". This has become our motto.
Florence Nightingale believed that the nurses’ prime concern has been for the patients rather than the illness and was particularly concerned with the part played by the environment, i.e. the ward, in preventing early recovery.
Day Care is an essential service to meet the social needs of the community in especially designed unit, with a warm and friendly atmosphere.
The Surgical Day Unit has a good working relationship with medical staff of all grades, nursing staff, clerical and other health support professionals, reflecting the team work needed for admission, treatment and early discharge. Minor procedures are performed with minimal upset to family life, research indicates that the elderly are more likely to resume the activities of living after such a short period of hospitalisation.
Care is based on the humanistic principle that persons behave in an individual way and will not modify his/her behaviour unless his/her feelings support the change. Therefore appropriate information, teaching and health education is given allowing the patient to make informed choices regarding his/her illness.
We have modified Orem’s Self Care Model of Nursing to suit the individual need of our patients, adhering to hospital policy and in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Guidelines.
