What patient care situations are available in this placement?
The Endoscopy Unit currently has 2 procedure rooms dedicated to different procedures such as gastroscopy; colonoscopy; flexible sigmoidoscopy and bronchoscopy. The unit also has a satellite service in Radiology for procedures which are undertaken under X-ray control such as ERCP; PEG insertion. The Endoscopy department carries out both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Examples of therapeutic procedures are banding of varices; injection of bleeding vessels; banding of piles; removal of foreign bodies and insertion of gastrotomy tubes.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
The student will be given an opportunity to develop their basic clinical skills such as monitoring the patients observations; enhancing their communication skills; pre, peri and post procedure care. The student will be supported in admission and discharge of patients; provision of appropriate advice or health teaching of the patient.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Use of topical anaesthetics such as throat sprays
- Collection of biopsy samples
- Use of different IT systems within the department
