About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please download the Student Welcome Pack prior to commencing placement.

Students will be given a tour of the ward, including health and safety, fire, security, meeting staff, introduction to their mentor/assessor, name of their link tutor, ward organisation, moving and handling, major incident issues and patient care delivery.

This placement will be  supporting learners using a GM Synergy approach to placement learning, please refer to welcome booklets for more information around this.

Shift patterns are at the discretion of the placement manager/ Practice educational lead for each placement and will depend on the needs of the placement to enable effective student support using the Synergy approach.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentors are allocated prior to the students arrival.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07.30 – 15.30

Late:

13.00 – 21.00

Night:

20.45 – 07.45

Shift Notes:

Long days:- 07.30 – 21.00 (Long days will have to be discussed with ward manager)

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Caring for patients with multiple medical conditions, social needs and clinically advanced illnesses that need support, input and co-ordination of services which consider all the patients circumstances.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Fluid balance recording and monitoring
  • Male/female urinary catheterisation

  • IV drugs Cannulation
