About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will be given a tour of the ward, including health and safety issues, fire issues, security issues, meeting staff, introduction to their assessor, name of their link tutor, ward organisation, moving and handling, major incident issues and patient care delivery.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentors are allocated prior to the students’ arrival.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

7.30-13.45

Late:

13.45-20.00

Night:

19.30-08.00

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

The unit covers patients with a wide variety of medical conditions-allergic reactions, cardiac problems, COPD, PE, DVT, hypoglycaemia, ingestion of toxic substances, cellulitis to name a few.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Care Delivery: Medicine administration, IV therapy, national early warning scores, neurological observations. blood sugar monitoring, patient care, wound care.

Care Management: Admission and discharge, care planning, MDT working Professional & Ethical: Confidentiality, privacy & dignity, consent, advocacy, safe guarding

Personal and Professional: Interpersonal skills, professional standards, collaborative care
