About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
- Students are asked to ring/ email the department as the person you need to speak to may not be available.
- Upon contact, the placement contact will allocate your assessor/supervisor and send you all information needed before start of placement.
- General orientation, overview of the practice area, including a welcome pack (emailed before starting).
- Introductions to named Practice Assessors/Supervisors, other staff and explanation of differing roles.
- Allocated time for initial meeting/orientation.
- General overview of the purpose and running of the Unit on a day to basis
- Information booklets given along with beginner’s pack.
- Opportunity to observe procedures on different conditions from the specialist nurses and medical staff.
- Identify spoke placements.

- We aim to provide the highest quality of care possible, provided by knowledgeable and appropriately trained nursing team with reference to evidence-based practice. The care we provide will be underpinned by an understanding of the therapeutic aspects of humour with respect to the need for sensitivity and privacy when required.
What are the arrangements for Mentors/ Assessors?
- Once students have been allocated to our unit, we will assign them to their Practice Assessors/Supervisors to work with, all offering various knowledge and skills.
- Your Practice Assessor/Supervisor will usually greet you on your first day and give you an orientation to the unit and introduced to staff on duty.
- You will also be given a student information pack / workbook and allocated time to read through both booklets.
- We advise that you contact the ward prior to the placement and the orientation booklet can be emailed to you so you know what the placement is about before attending.
- The off duty can be negotiated between you and your Practice Education Lead.
- Students remain supernumerary throughout their placement.
- Time will be allocated for you to meet privately with your Practice Assessors/Supervisors to discuss the placement and your learning needs.
- You and your Practice Assessors/Supervisors will ensure your documentation is completed in an accurate and timely fashion.

It is essential for students to attend on time to ensure they do not miss the morning Huddle
Patient Care Situations
- Care, assessment and investigations of patients with various medical conditions
- Admissions, procedures, infusions, and tests for outpatients’ patients
- Care of the patients from different specialities and different policies that are adhered to

Core Clinical Skills
- Care of patient and families/partners
- Observations to include Neuro observations.
- Handover of patients during shifts
- Record keeping and documentation on EPR.
- Interpretation of NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relationship to practice
- Co-ordination and organisation of relevant investigations
- Nursing role in investigative procedures i.e. lumbar puncture, muscle biopsy
- Preparation and calculation and monitoring of Intravenous therapy.
- Preparation and administration of subcutaneous, intravenous, and intramuscular injections
- Liaising and referring to members of the multidisciplinary team
- Discharge
- Insertion/removal of cannulas
- IV Therapies
