About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Bury IV Therapy Team administer intravenous medication to patients within the teams clinic or at the patient’s home environment. This is to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and to support early discharges from hospital, which increases bed capacity and saves resources. The team also provide a bisphosphonate service where referrals are received from Christies Adjuvant Service. This is a service for postmenopausal women following a diagnosis and treatment for early-stage breast cancer. The team closely monitor patients by completing a holistic nursing assessment, physiological observations and blood monitoring. There is opportunities to learn about the care and management of different lines, including peripheral cannulas, midlines, PICCs and Porta-Cath Devices.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

07:30-15:30 (30 minute break). however depending on learning opportunities each day there may be some flexibility in working patterns.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication, observations, ANTT, venepuncture and cannulation, observation of central line care management, observation of IV medication preparation, medication management, wound management, observation of medical devices (IV pump and syringe drivers).
