About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Everyone is met by the security department for key induction and security induction as they arrive.
Everyone is allocated a mentor and placement ward prior to their arrival.
Everyone meets either their mentor or associate mentor (Registrant) on their first day and is orientated to the ward/hospital
Everyone is given a student orientation pack for Cygnet Hospitals.
Discuss learning objectives and PDPs etc.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
- All mentors/assessors have regular updates as planned
- Weekly progress meetings with mentor/associate mentor/student
- Students work at least two shifts a week with mentor/associate mentor
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

The shift patterns worked by full time staff are 7.00am – 7.15pm or 7.00pm – 7.15am
The student would normally follow the shift pattern of their mentor/associate mentor. However the placement can be flexible.
The students are also able to access most of the hospitals training programme, which would normally take place between 9.00 – 5.00pm
The hospital is able to offer many Spoke Placements, these would normally be attended within a 9.00 – 5.00 basis.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Attendance at MDT meetings, CPA meetings, MHRTs, care planning, risk assessments, observation of appropriate management of violence & aggression, patients who use self harm etc. access to community meetings, 1-1 sessions with patients, involvement in community outings, ward based activities, delivering care to patients, meeting patients physical, personal and mental healthcare needs.
