About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Welcome to the Irwell unit, a purpose-built 48–bedded mental health unit serving the population of Bury within the range of 18 years to 65 years of age. We are part of Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, along with Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside andStockport.
The unit comprises of two wards, South ward on the ground floor and North ward onthe first floor. In addition the unit also has provision for in-patient therapy services, ADL (Activities of Daily Living) kitchen, a Section 136 suite,relaxation room, gym, a staff rest room, a resource room, laundry and activity rooms.
North Ward is a 24-bedded ward; acute psychiatric inpatient ward, which caters for male and female service users from the north sector of Bury.
During your stay with us you will have the opportunity to work within the multi-disciplinary team and participate in all areas of care on the ward around the 24 hour cycle.The ward is a very supportive environment and encourages students to structure their own learning outcomes under the supervision of the team and to ask questions to provide an enjoyable and fulfilling learning experience.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
The English National Board/ Department of Health (2001) sees mentors as facilitators of learning who supervise and assess students in practice settings. The role of the mentor is to help the student progress, develop and achieve learning outcomes. Each student will be allocated to a mentor within the first 48 hours of his or her placement.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:

To ensure that students get the most from the placement, Students are required to work at least 3 shifts with their Mentor/Associate and all rotas must be agreed with your Mentor. This is to ensure individual learning objectives are met.
Every student will be expected to complete an individual off duty sheet for the time that they are on placement and this must be filed in the ward off duty folder located in the ward office.
