About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Students will have a full induction to the ward, this includes fire safety, key induction and induction pack will be completed to identify to risk issues relating to patients that the student needs to know about, we will also discuss any learning needs and how the team can support you in this

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Mentors will be allocated prior to the students first day and they are more than welcome to call up one week prior commencement of placement to ask any questions. We currently have 4 mentors on the ward.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

07:15 – 15.15 with a 30 minute break

Late:

13:30 – 21:15 with a 30 minute break

Night:

21:00 – 07:30 with a 45 minute break

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Acute mental health care, general physical health care and monitoring, alcohol detox and support patients with ADL’s.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Recovery model

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Student will be able to learn a variety of clinical skills: safe and effective medicines management, supporting the nursing team in welcoming new patients onto the ward and working through the admission process, the safe discharge process for patients, working with the professionals (community mental health team, home treatment team, drugs and alcohol services and also external services such as social services and advocacy). Learning skills and knowledge in regards to patients’ physical health and how this is monitored and managed effectively in hospital and followed up in the community. Attend and participate in patient reviews with the MDT. Learning how to complete an assessment of a patient’s mental state by using assessment tools, such as, brief psychiatric rating scale, becks depression scale and mental state examination. Communications skills, such as clinical notes, care plans and risk assessment and how to formulate risk. Safeguarding referral and the process.

ECT Therapy, section 135/136, leadership and management of the ward (final placement), Mental Health Act.

Additional Information

All students are expected to wear full nursing uniform and comply with all infection control requirement (feel free to enquire prior to commencing placement). There is a canteen on site where students can purchase food and drinks, although this is only open until 3pm.
