About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
On commencement of placement students will meet with their mentor/ associate mentor on their first shift. They will be given a student pack which contains all information needed about the ward and their off duty will be done for them by the clinical lead incorporating working alternate weekends.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
There are several qualified mentors on the ward and all qualified staff are trained to at least associate mentor level.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7:15am – 2:45pm
Late:
1:45pm – 9:15pm
Night:
9:00pm – 7:30am

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Due to the age group of the patients there are many clinical skills to be achieved on this placement, this will include bathing and washing clients, feeding them, taking physical observations such as blood pressures pulse and temperature. Students will also be able to attend to oral hygiene. Make beds and assist with dressing of wounds under the supervision of the qualified staff.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Students will be able to undertake physical observations of clients including temperature, pulse and blood pressure. They will also be able to assist in the washing, dressing and feeding of clients on the ward. The students will also have opportunity to assist with bed making.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Students may be able to assist in the dressing of wounds alongside the wound care nurse on the ward and have some basic training on different types of dressings to be used in different situations.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Students will have access to any in house training available. They will also be able to use the computer in the student room to access the internet for learning. Students are also expected to undertake a small project whilst on placement on Ramsbottom Ward which includes doing a display on the ward for patient wellbeing. Topics that have been used in the past include, preparing for winter and healthy eating.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The ward is currently going through the productive ward process which includes working through a set of modules in order to improve and increase time the staff can spend directly with patients. This is audited to see how well the new systems are working and how things are improving. Students will be encouraged to take part in this whilst on the ward.
