About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
There is a booklet for students to complete and they will meet with their mentors in the first week and discuss their shift patter and learning outcomes.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
There is currently one mentor on the Unit who is supported by nursing staff who are skilled and experienced and are able to support students when their mentors are unavailable. Mentors will work 40% of their time as a minimum. The Horizon Unit also has two mentors.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.15am – 19.45pm Day shift.
Late:
Night:
19.15pm – 07.45am Night shift.
Shift Notes:
We do not have short shifts. Our working patterns are long days, twilights 12.00 – 00.00 midnight and night shifts.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Assessment of mood and mental state, crisis intervention. Detention under the Mental Health Act, informal admissions. We sometimes have admissions under the parental consent as outlined in the Children’s Act (2004). CPA reviews and liaising with community teams and care co-ordinators for the young person’s transition into the community.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
We use a recovery model of assessment, intervention, review and if appropriate discharge planning. We have a 4 – 6 week pathway, however the young person can sometimes exceed this. . If a young person requires further treatment, discussions would be had with our sister unit The Horizon Unit which nurses longer term inpatient service.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Nursing assessment, care delivery, review, and evaluation, administration of medication. Aseptic techniques. Therapeutic engagements with young people, attachment issues. Managing people with psychosis. Risk assessments
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Working with children and young people. The differences between CAMHS and adult services.
What resources are available to help students learning?
We have several resources on the ward, a resource room with information on mental health, there is also an education centre which students can assess, internet.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We have no formal research projects at present but always work on areas to improve our practice. Currently we are part of QNIC (Quality networks for inpatient CAMHS). This is a service that helps us meet with other professionals which involves peer reviews where we assess other inpatient CAMHS services. As part of this we are currently part of a project called You’re Welcome.
