About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
The majority of your first day will be an induction to the ward. This includes discussing the Welcome Pack and its contents such as the spoke placements available, orientation to the ward, and training on medical equipment and devices. On your first day you will also be introduced to you Mentor and/or Associate Mentor, be given your off duty which can be discussed if need be and you may also arrange a time with your Mentor(s) for your initial interview.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student is given a Mentor and an Associate Mentor who we will aim for you to work with for a minimum of 40% of your working week, holidays and sickness permitting.

A long day on Ward 76 is classed as twelve hours.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
On this placement there are a variety of patient care situations, all of which are on a short term basis (Maximum of 3 days). However, some patients are regular attenders.
The different areas of Ward 76 Elective Treatment Centre include Short Stay, Day Case and Medical Investigations.
Short stay is a 22 bedded ward for both surgical and medical patients where you can stay for a maximum of 3 days.
Day Case has 26 spaces for patient allocation for admitting patients 14 of which are also used for post-operative patients. There is a morning, afternoon and on occasions an evening theatre list on Day Case so the post-operative bed spaces are filled on a rotational basis as the children on Day Case tend to be discharged after a few hours.
Medical Investigations is a 6 spaced area where children attend for blood tests, reviews and regular drug infusions. Just like Day Case, Medical Investigations spaces are filled on a rotational basis as children are discharged.
Overall, Ward 76 is a busy environment with up to 120 children attending every day, all of which could be under any of the hospital’s 23 specialities.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The admission on Ward 76 are based on Roper, Logan and Tierney’s Model of Nursing.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
*Receiving and giving handover (using SBAR)
*Admitting and discharging patients
*Care planning
*Pre and post-op care of the patient Physiological observations including CSM (colour, sensation and movement)
*Drugs calculations (oral and IV)
*Being exposed to Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT)
*Being exposed to infusions and injections (including blood transfusions)
*Reading infusion pumps and recording fluid balance
*Monitoring wound site and assisting with wound care
*Time management due to working in a fast paced and busy environment
*Empathy, rapport and reassurance for anxious patients and parents
*Multi-disciplinary team working with professionals such as Surgeons, Consultants, Anaesthetists, Specialist Nurses and Physiotherapists.

Drug administration and the use of the different drugs throughout the unit.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Ward 76 have been part of the Improving Quality Programme for many years, this is an NHS Institute innovation programme which aims to improve the ward environment and process. We have seen many improvements within the ward area by been part of this programme, such as a tidy ward and improving the patient journey for different client groups.
Ward 76 is also involved with Vision to Action work. Processes are carried out to ensure patient care is seamless and organized care for their individual needs.
Ward 76 also have regular staff meetings where ideas are discussed and implemented and re-assessed at the next meeting.
