About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
- Off-duty
- Mentor and second named trained nurse to work with during placement.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
- Mentors are allocated prior to the student arrival on the ward. Students should work with their mentor at least two shifts per week.
- Assessment dates are arranged between students and their mentors.
- Mentor allocation list can be found in the student folder.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07:30-15:30hrs
Late:
1300-2100 hrs
Night:
20:00 -08:00hrs
Shift Notes:
Long day 07; 30- 2100hrs
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
You will gain experience in many medical conditions such as Asthma ,Diabetes, Eczema, Respiratory infections, diarrhoea and vomiting, pyrexial children, meningitis, urinary tract infection, cerebral palsy, feeding problems and failure to thrive.
You will also gain insight into minor surgery when there is a need for us to take the overspill from other wards.
This also applies to tertiary patients and frequently we have Oncology, renal, neurology endocrine and other conditions being cared for on the ward.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Taking and recording vital signs of temperature pulse respirations and blood pressure.
- Maintaining accurate fluid balance charts.
- Neurological observations
- Observation of ANTT
- Drug calculations and the process of drug administration
- Naso-gastric/gastrostomy feeding
- Hygiene cares
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Observation of blood glucose monitoring
- Observation of setting up Intravenous fluids
- Observation of the process of giving and recording controlled drugs
- Management of Diabetes and giving of insulin
- Undertaking nasopharyngeal aspirate collection
- Multi-dose inhaler technique
- Observation of insertion of long lines.
- Management of central lines
