What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
- Students are allocated two mentors while on placement
- Mentors are kept on the trust live register
- Students will spend 75% of their time with a qualified mentor
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
08:00-16:00
Late:
11:00-19:00

Long Days:- 07:30-19:00 (2 short shifts & 2 long days over 4 days)

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Care and management of a child and family with cancer attending for out-patient appointments
- Observation of children undertaking day case general anaesthetic for bone marrows and lumbar punctures
- Interpretation of full blood count results
- Observation of children receiving intravenous chemotherapy using ANTT
- Observation of children receiving supportive treatment e.g. blood transfusions and immunoglobulin infusions
- Observation of haematology children receiving regular blood transfusions
- Management, assessment and care required of an unwell child on treatment requiring admission
- Observe and participate in obtaining and recording of vital signs and the identification of a child at risk using the early warning score
- The role of the multi disciplinary team/MDT meetings

Childrens cancers are treated following treatment protocols and clinical trials.
The patient environment and patient experience is audited thorough senior leadership walks, matron ward rounds and patient trackers.
Local Clinical Governance groups meet monthly.
