About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
*Induction morning with Clinical Educator (suject to availability of Clinical Educator). This includes orientation to the ward, specialities & documentation etc. During this time, induction paperwork will be completed and information given on how to achieve desired learning outcomes & meet any personal development goals.
*Introduced to Mentor/Associate Mentor in first week of placement.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student is allocated a mentor and associate mentor.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Night:
Shift Notes:
Early:07.30 – 15.30 – 30 min break
Late: 12.00 – 20.00 – 30 min break
Night:19.30 – 08.00 – 2 x 30 min break
Long Day: 07.30 – 20.00 – 2 x 30 min break
Notes: Our ward works on a two shift system, either long days or nights. Students will be automatically rostered onto these shifts to coincide with their mentor. If you cannot work long days, please e-mail the ward at your earliest opportunity to advise the student link nurses. We will do our best to accommodate individual circumstances.
If there are any problems with your off duty, please highlight this as soon as possible during your placement so we are able to look into adjusting it for you.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Examples include:
Repair of defects for spina bifida, insertion/revision of shunts, tumour debulk, craniofacial surgery, care of head injuries, medicine management for neurological conditions, epilepsy treatment, acute care of children following acquired brain injury prior to transfer for rehabilitation, application of external fixator for correction of congenital and trauma deformities, corrective hip surgery, orthopaedic traction, treatment of trauma injuries, spinal surgery for correction of congenital and degenerative deformities, ear, nose and throat care of a patient with a tracheostomy.

Additional Information
Ward 78 is a 32 bed unit covering neurosurgery, orthopaedic trauma/surgery, neurology, spinal surgery and ENT. We are situated on 1st floor in RMCH above the main reception.
Please feel free to familiarise yourself with the ward prior to placement by contacting the ward to arrange a visit.
If you have any problems during your placement, please highlight these as early as possible. This will assist us in dealing with the issue & hopefully help to make your placement as enjoyable & beneficial as possible.
