About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students will be allocated a supervisor and assessor prior to the commencement in practice.
The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All Students are allocated a supervisor to support them in practice; we can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off assessor.
All supervisors and assessors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2015) and are registered on the Live register for mentors held by the practice education Facilitators.
In the event of your allocated supervisor/assessor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice.

Early: 7am – 3pm (30-minute break)
Mid shift: 11am -7pm (30 minute break)
Late: 1pm – 9 pm (30-minute break)
Long Day: 7am – 7pm (1-hour break)
Night: 7pm – 7am (1-hour break)
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
We nurse young people with complex and challenging mental health problems. Our young people are aged 12-17 years of age, some are first line presentations and others have an extensive history of complex and enduring mental health problems. We have 5 beds and our pathway is to provide an intensive and recovery focused pathway back into the community or to undertake assessment for other needed input; this could include therapeutic placements or secure services.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
There are many core clinical skills that can be learnt such as, medicine management, wound care, documentation skills, communication skills, risk management, risk assessment, interpersonal relationship, team working.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
In addition to this there are opportunities with the patients to carry out ward meetings, attend ward round, link in with members of the MDT. Providing handovers, incident reporting, delegation skills and management skills.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Should a student have any learning disabilities of difficulties they should disclose this to their mentor so that the appropriate support measures can be put in place to ensure a positive learning experience?
The student will have the opportunity to attend appropriate and relevant trainings provided by GMMH whilst on placement on the ward.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Currently we are looking into bringing all aspects of Safe wards into our ward to make it more beneficial for our young people and welcome any ideas that you may have!
Spoke Placements
Phoenix Ward, Junction 17
Tier 4 acute ward. Observe the referral pathway. Deal with admissions of an acutely unwell patient. Gain an awareness of assessment periods. Observe discharge of stable patient. Become aware of section 117 follow up.
Griffin Ward, Junction 17
Understand the transition between CAMHS and adult services. Services for women between the age of 18 and 25 years old.
Gardener Unit
Observe forensic medium secure for male CAMHS. Gain an awareness of forensic pathways.
Occupational Therapist
Work alongside the occupational health team to develop knowledge and understanding of the roles they play in accessing and developing the young people’s everyday living skills and ability to function socially.
Dietician
Develop an understanding of the importance of young people’s dietary intake. The effects diet can have on young people’s development and mental state. Gain knowledge in regards to eating disorders and meal plans implemented with such young people.
Day Service
Have an understanding of what the day service incorporates and the important role it can play in the transition of young people returning to community living.
Family Therapist
Work alongside the family therapist and gain experience in working with young people’s family and carers. Understand the impact that young people’s families and carers can have in one’s recovery. Support families and carers to have a better understanding of a young person’s struggles and difficulties.
Physical Health Practitioners
Shadow physical health practitioners and learn about re-occurring physical health issues young people struggle with. Observe physical health team care for self-harm wounds; assessing wounds, dressing and re-dressing wounds. Gain confidence in using the aseptic technique when caring for wounds.
