In order for students to gain maximum benefit from this clinical practice placement, all ward-based nurses (including those who are not mentor trained) are encouraged to actively involve students in the delivery of patient care and treatment.
Students are encouraged to shadow the varying roles on the ward ranging from treatment nurse, security nurse and activity co-ordinator.

Buttermere ward is a female 9 bedded forensic acute ward based at The Edenfield Centre regional secure unit.
Many of the women have been referred from prison other secure units, special hospitals and from community from around the North-West.
Buttermere ward promotes rehabilitation and recovery through the acute phase of a patients mental illness using the recovery model of care.
The nursing team aim to educate and encourage their patients to fully understand their mental illness and advocate the reinforcement of positive social behaviours through boundary setting and intensive nursing input.
The ward caters for all kinds of mental health illness including schizophrenia, bi-polar, schizoaffective disorder and personality disorder.
It is not uncommon for patients to have a history of drug and alcohol abuse and also eating disorders and a history of self-harm and/or attempted suicide.
Buttermere ward has a philosophy to treat its female patients with respect and dignity whilst supporting and encouraging them through their illness during a time of crisis.
Each patient is assigned a nursing team comprising of a primary nurse, and associate nurse and support workers. They will also have a multi-disciplinary team including a consultant, social workers, CPN’s and occupational therapists.
Each team member has a role in the rehabilitation and recovery of their patient.
The aim of the ward is to provide individualised care, using the appropriate skills and expertise of the staff group to:
- Assist the individual to regain the best level of mental health
- Assess the risk to patient and others
- Offer input to patients with particular specialist needs
- Reduce the risk of repeat offending
- Assist the individual to move to the most appropriate placement in the future.
