About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
In patient rehab unit working with patients with enduring mental health and complex needs.
At Copeland we provide a high standard of researched based care, which is regularly evaluated and adapts to change. We promote recovery and aim to provide our clients with the care and treatment skills needed for them to move on to accommodation which suits their individual needs.
All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to the commencement of the placement. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional). Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All Students are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice; we can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor.
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the live register for mentors held by the practice education Facilitators.
In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice.
All qualified staff are given the opportunity to study the Preparation for Mentorship module credited or non credited.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30 a.m. – 15.30 p.m.
Late:
13.00 p.m. – 21.00 p.m.
Night:
7.30 p.m. – 7.45 a.m.
Shift Notes:
Long days: 7.30am- 19.45pm (Students are not expected to work Long days but if students are interested in working this shift system then this can be negotiated with your mentor).
Students are encouraged to work a mixture of early, late and night shifts which incorporate some weekend exposure to experience 24 hour care.
Students are expected to work at a minimum of 40% of their time with their mentor.

Direct nursing care
Admission/discharge procedures – incorporating Care Programme Approach
- Devising Comprehensive Care plans and Risk Assessments.
- Use of Recovery STAR tool.
- Full range of physical health Care.
- 1:1 interview techniques /Completing Mental State Examinations.
- Administering prescribed medications and observing for any side effects.
- Dual Diagnosis
- Substance Abuse Care and management of Substance Abuse.
- OT and Psychology assessments
- Undertaking any identified and appropriate interventions with clients.
- Support clients to maintain their interests, identity and emotional well being whilst receiving various forms of care.
- Observing and reporting any changes in their condition, circumstances finance, environment and presentation etc.
- Assist clients to maintain and improve their mobility, supporting with the use of Public Transport.
- Encourage clients to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance.
- Assist clients to manage their personal and domestic circumstances, supporting shopping and cooking.
- Assist and maintain clients nutritional needs and ensure they are catered for.
- Assist / promote and encourage clients to use community facilities.
- Promote social inclusion.

Clinical governance and clinical audit
Spoke Placements
Students can access a variety of spokes placements which are highlighted in the student welcome pack and in a spoke folder in placement.
Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their mentor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their leaning.
Additional Information
Public Health
Whilst on placement on Copeland students are actively encouraged to engage with the multidisciplinary team.
This includes:-
1. Smoking cessation sessions which are held weekly
2. Infection control, in particularly the importance of hand washing
3. The trust employs a dietician and all clients are encouraged to eat healthily. Students are able to refer to the dietician and attend her sessions with the clients
4. We have an Assistant Physical Health Practitioner who attends the ward daily and actively encourages students to spend the day with her and participate in all aspects of physical health; including observations and wound care
5. We liaise with the local sexual health clinic and clients are encouraged to attend if they have any issues regarding their sexual health
6. We have a dual diagnosis nurse based at Meadowbrook and students are actively encouraged to spend time with her and understand her role within the trust
Dress code
Dress Code: Smart/Casual, no denim, no trainers. ID badges must be worn/be visible at all times. Anybody in inappropriate dress will be sent home immediately on arrival to change.
Mentors
You may be supported by practice staff studying for the preparation for mentorship course, this is overseen by a qualified mentor and your documents will be countersigned by the mentor. Time keeping/Punctuality All student Nurses are expected to arrive on duty on a timely manner and punctuality is of paramount importance to enable best patient care delivery through effective shift co-ordination.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are not allowed to be used on the ward. Mobile phones can only be used when on your breaks unless obviously this is of an urgent matter.
