About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to their commencement in practice. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact the placement no sooner than 2 weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All student are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice. We can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the Live Register for mentors held by the Practice Education Facilitators
In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice
All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module credited or not credited
Sometimes you may be mentored by a trainee mentor, this will be overseen by a qualified mentor in practice
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30am – 3.30pm
Late:
1pm – 9pm
Night:
7.30pm – 7.45am

Notes:
30-minute break on short shifts, 1-hour break on long day and night shift
Students are expected to work a variety of shifts to experience the 24 hour cycle of care
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
MacColl ward is a 14 bedded male acute admission ward, based at Meadowbrook unit in Salford however our admissions are patient who live in Manchester and would have historically come under Manchester Mental Health before the two trusts merged.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
¿Risk assessing and managing risk
¿Planning care, providing care as directed in the patient’s care plans

¿Record keeping, taking part in mental state assessment and the documentation of this, taking part in the planning and assessment of care plans
¿Administration of medication, drug calculations
¿Working with the multidisciplinary team, preparing for multi-disciplinary team meetings, collating information to present at these meetings
¿Clinical decision making
¿Specified skills in relation to learning outcomes and University module content.
¿Hygiene issues – hand washing, infection control
¿Personal care, wound care etc.
¿Supporting and giving information to patients’ carers and relatives

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
¿Safewards – A model explaining variation in conflict and containment, with ten easy interventions based on the model
¿Accreditation for Inpatient Mental Health Services (AIMS) – The accreditation standards, drawn from key documents, will help wards demonstrate compliance with the Healthcare Commission’s ‘Standards for Better Health’ and will support implementation of NICE guidelines and the National Service Framework.

Additional Information
¿Nurses on the unit now wear uniforms and students are asked to come in their uniforms (black trousers/skirt and white polo shirt)
¿Identification badges are essential.
¿Students are asked to telephone the Ward before the placement starts to arrange the shift they are to start on.
Philosophy of Care
By using the complementary and diverse skills of the multi-disciplinary team, the ward will strive to meet the needs of the people whilst recognising the uniqueness of each individual.
All times display respect for privacy and dignity of the individual thereby enhancing the facilities available to provide a supportive and safe environment.
The team aim to involve clients in their own care to an optimum level, to facilitate maximisation of their own strengths and enable them to help themselves towards independence.
The team aim is to provide an open, informative ward, to ensure dissemination of information and educational opportunities to clients, relatives and staff alike.
Staff recognise the challenging nature of the issues related to the care of the mentally ill and will strive at all times to provide care in an ethical and professional manner
