About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

All students will be allocated a practice assessor prior to the commencement in practice. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction on their first day.

Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).

Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All students are allocated a practice assessor to support them in practice. Practice assessors and facilitators have the responsibility for their preparation and attending updates for maintaining competence. Practice assessors will be able to access support from PEF’s and ULL’s where required.

In the event of your allocated practice assessor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice.

Practice assessors and students will have allocated protected time to support with meetings and completion of necessary paperwork.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Early:

8am-4pm

Late:

2pm – 10pm

Night:

8.30pm- 7.45am

Shift Notes:

Students are encouraged to work a mixture of early, late and night shifts which incorporate some weekend exposure to experience 24 hour care.

Students are expected to work at least 40% of their time with their practice assessor.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Home Treatment is defined as a community based method of treating mental illness and/or psychological distress that focuses on providing intensive intervention and treatment in the least restrictive environment possible (normally in the service users home).

The service is provided for:

  • Salford residents 16+
  • People with severe mental illness, in particular schizophrenia, bi-polar affective disorder and those with severe depressive disorder.
  • Those with acute psychiatric crisis of such severity, without the involvement of the Home Based Treatment Team hospitalisation would be necessary.

Spoke Placements

Students can access a variety of spokes placements which are highlighted in the student welcome pack.

Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their practice assessor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.

Additional Information

Dress code

Students are not required to wear their Uniform but expected to dress smart casual “i.e. no trainers, denim/ripped jeans, offensive logo’s/writing, short dresses/skirt etc”. Anybody in inappropriate dress will be sent home immediately on arrival to change.

They must also wear their ID badges at all times.

Students will be visiting clients in their own homes and students are expected to maintain a professional image of the Home Based Team Treatment Service at all times in and outside clinical areas.
