About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Full induction to service and Unit, including security and confidentiality over 2 days. Full introduction pack to the placement will be sent to individual students prior to commencement of placement. There is an expectation that students adhere to a smart casual dress code.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student nurse will be allocated a mentor and associate mentor for the duration of their placement, identified within their packs, prior to commencement.
Initial meetings will take place within their first week to review their own action plans/objectives together with expectations of the mentors during the placement.
Students may also have the opportunity to spend time with various members of the team including CFMHN’s, community support workers, general practice nurse, Mr Ian Maule and social workers.

9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Students need to telephone if late or sick.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patients are seen in a range of community settings: court, bail hostels, hostels, care and nursing homes, each with a range of mental health problems.
Students will also have the opportunity to visit prisons, special hospitals together with current inpatients.
Students will not be expected to manage a caseload, due to the nature of our client group, however, they will be expected to undertake full assessment of need and care planning for one or more clients, under the direct supervision of their mentor/associate mentor during this placement
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The Health Career Model (B. Hodges 1986), however to aid the assessment and evaluation process a number of standardised evidence based assessments are utilised by the Forensic Community Mental Health Nurses and the Clinical Teams these include:
- HCR20
- LUNSERS
- Early Signs Scale
- KGV
- STAR
- Drug Attitude Inventory
- HoNOS
Where specific needs are identified through nursing assessment, specific evidenced based assessment tools and interventions are implemented i.e.: Anxiety and Depression scales, behavioural assessments , PSI etc.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Care is provided in a flexible and non-judgmental manner by adopting the following core components:
- Assessment of need; pre and post discharge
- Assessment and management of Risk
- Individual care planning and evaluation
- Multi-disciplinary collaboration
- Communication and accurate record keeping including use of IT system
- Health Promotion and Education for clients and carers
- Advocacy Research
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Each of the CFMHNs has an identified specialism. There may be the opportunity within the placement to experience these areas.
Students will also have the opportunity to identify various spoke placements, however, these will normally be available within the latter part of the placement and in negotiation with their identified mentor.

What resources are available to help students learning?
Rapidly expanding and diverse service -offering a wide range of experience. Students will have the opportunity to attend regular on site educational seminars including peer reviews of individual clients.
Students will have access various reading material including articles, books, internet access etc as well as having highly experienced and skilled staff on the team.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The Edenfield hosts the research department for the Trust The department itself is involved in many areas of research and development and will afford the opportunity for the students to access and be informed of new developments.
Spoke Placements
Depot Clinic Identified through discussion with students and their identified learning objects. Also identified inpatient wards within Edenfield and Psychology.
