About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to their commencement in practice. The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact the placement no sooner than 2 weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All student are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice. We can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the Live Register for mentors held by the Practice Education Facilitators
In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice
All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module credited or not credited
Sometimes you may be mentored by a trainee mentor, this will be overseen by a qualified mentor in practice
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
07.30am – 15.30pm
Late:
13.00pm – 21.00pm
Night:
19.30pm – 07.45am
Shift Notes:
Long Day – 07.30am – 19.45pm
30 minute break on short shifts, 1 hour break on long day and night shift
Students are expected to work a variety of shifts to experience the 24 hour cycle of care
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients with a variety of mental health problems, Intensive care, safe and secure setting
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Recovery Focused
Holistic assessment
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Administering medication – orally and intramuscularly
Undertaking drug calculations
Preparing for multi-disciplinary team meetings, collating information to present at these meetings
Attending multi-disciplinary team meetings and taking part where appropriate
Liaising with individual members of the MDT face to face, by phone, fax and by letter/email
Observing and taking part in communication with patients on the ward
Supporting and giving information to patients’ carers and relatives
Engaging in therapeutic activities and groups on the ward
Assisting patients to undertake activities of daily living
Taking part in assessing the risk of patients and of the environment
Carrying out risk management strategies
Taking part in mental state assessment and the documentation of this
Taking part in the planning and assessment of care plans
Providing care as directed in the patient’s care plans
Working as part of the nursing team being responsible for the care of patients during the shift
Undertaking record keeping in various forms including computerized record keeping
Working with both informal patients and those detained under the Mental Health Act 1983
Using evidence based assessment tools
Observing the adaptation of the service to meet government policies and guidelines
Observing nurses working within professional guidelines
Undertake physical observations and take part in physical care of patients
Access opportunities to delegate work and allocate jobs to members of the team
Enhance problem solving skills, decision making and time management
Working with patients from different racial, ethnic and religious groups
Working with patients who have additional needs eg language barriers, physical disabilities, learning disabilities
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
ECT, physical investigations, research based mood charts, home assessments, physio input, O.T. input, catheterization.
What resources are available to help students learning?
The students have access to internet and intranet
Library access at the Prestwich site and Mayo Building at Salford Royal
All members of the team are excellent resources to support you in your learning

A variety of spokes are available for students to attend under the negotiation of the mentor

The placement accommodates 2nd and 3rd year students only
All practice based assessments can be achieved in placement
