About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are welcomed and orientated to the community mental health team.
Locally developed induction packs are available for new students on arrival and these contain essential information for the student starting on placement.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are allocated a mentor prior to their start date but the nursing teams are responsive to student needs should a change be requested.
Their mentor will satisfy the NMC requirements for mentorship and may be supported by an associate mentor in helping the student meet their learning needs.
Both mentors and associate mentors are required by the Trust to update their knowledge every year by attending training organised by the Trust.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Care is delivered within the overarching framework of the Care Programme Approach.
Clinical needs are identified through multiple assessment techniques that include the Salford Tool for Assessment of Risk and the Manchester Care Assessment Schedule as standard.
The service predominantly delivers care to service users who have severe and/or enduring mental health problems, which include presentations such as psychosis, affective disorders, dual diagnosis and personality disorders.
The delivery of care takes place predominantly within the service users home environment; this can range from independent living through to a range of supported and residential facilities provided by statutory and non-statutory bodies.
Ongoing support, assessment and a range of therapeutic interventions are offered to service users with a severe and enduring mental illness within the framework of the multi-disciplinary team.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The community mental health teams in Salford have not adopted a nursing model for the delivery of nursing care.
Instead, a recovery approach is used across all disciplines conforming to the recommendations from the Chief Nursing Officers review of mental health nursing in 2006.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
The management of mental health problems in secondary care, using the core principles of the nursing process.
An emphasis on risk assessment and management, use of the Care Programme Approach and the management of severe and enduring mental health problems.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Development and management of therapeutic relationships.
Assessment techniques and an understanding of various clinical assessment tools.
How to develop care plans using the Care Programme Approach by responding to needs and recognising strengths.
Creating relapse prevention plans and crisis planning.
Enhancing recovery in service users who have severe and enduring mental health problems. Pharmacological interventions such as medicine management and depot administration.
Non pharmacological interventions such as psychosocial interventions, cognitive behavioural approaches, solution-focused therapies, and enhanced communication skills and techniques.
Multi-disciplinary involvement by use of spoke placements and multi-disciplinary meetings.
Understanding of both local and national policy development and the impact this has on practice.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Extensive clinical experience from a professionally staffed team.
Care plans are evidence-based and developed with multi-disciplinary input.
Internet access, journal publications and books are also available.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
New Ways of Working and the recovery approach are now being implemented in all the community mental health teams in Salford.
Ongoing practice development initiatives specific to nursing practice are also in progress.
