About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All learners will be allocated an assessor prior to the placement starting. The learner will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours- local and PARE orientation. Learners will also complete a key induction and bio-metrics at the start of placement.
Learners are encouraged to make contact with the placement prior to starting and are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service. Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Learners are assigned to an assessor and supervisor(s) prior to commencing placement where possible. The Assessor or Supervisor will complete the initial interview during the first week where possible.
Learners will primarily work alongside multiple supervisors who will then provide feedback to the assessor.
The Assessor will meet with the student at mid-point and final-point to provide feedback on development.
In order for students to gain maximum benefit from this clinical practice placement, all ward based nurses are encouraged to actively involve students in the delivery of patient care and treatment.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.00am – 3.00pm – 30 minute break
Late:
1.00pm – 9.00pm – 30 minute break
Night:
7pm – 7.15am – 1 hour break
Long Day-
7am – 7.15pm- 1 hour break
Learners are expected to work the same shift pattern as practitioners which includes days, nights, evenings and weekends. Learners are expected to work 2 x short shifts and 2 x long shifts per week (37.5 hours) except for bank holidays.
Learners doing night shifts would be expected to work 3 x night shifts on one week and 4 x night shifts another week to give them 37.5hrs per week average
Any changes to agreed off duty will need to be discussed with manager and/or PEL
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
We provide both 1-1 and group-based interventions dependent upon need.
- Health improvement activities such as screening, Podiatry, Chaplaincy, Physiotherapy, Dentist, Opticians, vaccination and lifestyle improvement support are also included.

Learners are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet on PARE to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their assessor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.

Silverdale Ward is a male treatment ward
Our staff are on hand to offer service users and their family members and carers information about mental health, recovery and the choices and resources available to them. Carers information packs are available and carers events take place throughout the year.
Sickness
Learners are expected to contact the ward and University absence email if they are not going to be attending placement due to sickness.
Dress Code
Learners are required to wear uniform and appropriate footwear as well as their GMMH ID badge at all times. Learners are expected to maintain a professional image service at all times in and outside clinical areas.
