About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to the commencement in practice.
The student will receive a welcome pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact the placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice. We can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor.
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the Live register for mentors held by the Practice Education Facilitators.
In the event of your alocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice.
All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module credited or non credited.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7am – 3pm (30 min break)
Late:
1pm – 9pm (30 min break)
Shift Notes:
Long day: 7am – 7.15pm (1 hr break)
Students are encouraged to work a mixture of early, late and night shifts which incorporate some weekend exposure to experience 24 hour care.
Students are expected to work at least 40% of their time with their mentor.
Students are encouraged to work two long days and two short days and must have stipulated meal breaks.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for clients with severe mental health problems EG: drug and alcohol related problems, challenging behaviours.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Spoke Placements
Students can access a variety of spokes placements which are highlighted in the student welcome pack.
Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their mentor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.

This Clinical Area is a 12 bedded female forensic low secure unit. Loweswater supports and empowers women with complex and challenging needs within a therapeutic and collaborative milieu, guiding recovery.
The Service provids a variety of therapeutic interventions and approaches to provide individualised care for the client group.
The Service values the client as an individual with a unique set of strengths and needs.
The needs of the client are met by a highly motivated and skilled MDT whose care is based on relevant research findings.
The team view it as an essential component of the individuals care that, wherever possible the client is involved in the therapeutic process.
Whilst ackkowledging the need for semi-secure environment, the team strive to create and maintain a domestic environment.
Clients are supported to maintain communication with family and friends.
Sickness:
Student are expected to contact the ward and the University if they are not going to be attending placement due to sickness. The mentor will contact the University to report your absence.
Dress Code:
Students are not required to wear their Uniform but expected to dress smart casual and wear their ID badges at all times. Students are expected to maintain a professional image service at all times in and outside clinical areas.
Anybody in inappropriate dress will be sent home immediately on arrival to change.
Mentors:
You may be supported by practice staff studying for the preparation for mentorship course, this is overseen by a qualified mentor and your documents will be countersigned by the mentor.
OSCE/PBA:
The Team are able to facilitate all OSCE/PBA learning outcomes whilst in placement.
