About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Prior to commencement of placement all students will receive a welcome letter, detailing their ward allocation, mentor and training dates. All students must attend Breakaways/Conflict resolution and corporate security training prior to starting placement at our national training centre at Arbury Court.
On your first day you will be met by our Practice Development Nurse or nominated deputy and orientated to the site/ward. In addition each student will receive secure key access and contraband training. Please remember to bring along a strong leather belt as secure keys and a strap cannot be allocated without this equipment.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
At Arbury Court we have a number of trained mentors across our 6 wards, who regularly attend mentor updates and support students on a regular basis. We aim to have a mentor/student ratio of 1:1, and allocate students to work alongside their mentor for the majority of their placement however there may be times where your mentor’s shifts may change to accommodate patient care or skill mix. In this instance you will be allocated a backup or associate mentor in the interim.

We are flexible to meet the needs of the student and patient care, if you require reasonable adaptions please discuss this with your mentor prior to starting placement. Students are preferred to work the same shift pattern as there mentor.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Students will be able to experience the full range of patient care, attend multi professional meetings (CPA, Tribunal reviews and the assessment and implementation of patient centred care) Students will be supervised and will need patient consent to take part.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
We use a variety of models to support patient care, with a primary focus of the recovery model incorporating holistic, patient centred care using the CPA structure as a framework.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Students will have the opportunity to work alongside very experienced staff to support a challenging group of patients recover from acute or enduring mental illness whilst working with multiple agencies, visiting court and participating in patient referral assessment.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We have recently opened a female psychiatric intensive care ward, students are welcome to visit this area as a spoke visit or for their formal placement area.
This specialist area of psychiatry provides the student with a number of opportunities including management of acute mental health issues, drug and alcohol needs and supporting patients from admission to discharge.

There may be opportunities to have spoke placements with our Occupational therapy and social work department. Additional we have sister hospitals in Atherton The Spinney (Male secure care)

Recovery First – Widnes (Low secure female ward and a male autism ward)
Additional Information
Please be aware that all students must complete Elysium Healthcare’s Mandatory Breakaway & Conflict Resolution and Security Training prior to placement. Please contact the practice development office on 01925 400626 to arrange this for you. You will be required to complete a health questionnaire prior to training, if you have any health conditions which may prevent you from attending please contact your personal tutor and the practice development team at Arbury Court (details above) to discuss this further. Reasonable adjustments can be made following assessment.
All students will be given computer access including patient’s records. Therefore all student will be required to complete information governance via our E-learning platform on the first day of placement. Full support and training will be given by your mentor and IT staff.
