About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are requested to make contact via telephone with Smithfield 2 weeks before their placement commences. During this call you will be informed of who your mentor is and also you will be able to organise a visit to Smithfield to have a look round and pick up your Student Pack. If you cannot visit Smithfield prior to commencing your placement please provide an email address so that the Student Pack can be emailed out to you.
Students will be shown around and orientated to the unit by a member of staff and introduced to the team members.
Upon commencing your placement the induction to the placement checklist will be completed by a member of the nursing team and an initial assessment with their named mentor will be arranged to take place within the first week of placement where students will be able to discuss any specific learning needs and goals to be achieved during the placement.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be informed of their allocated mentor on commencement of placement and an initial assessment will take place within the first week.
Mentors will work closely with students throughtout the placement providing relevant learning opportunities and assist and support students in achieving their learning needs and objectives.
Mid-point and end of placement meetings will be arranged to take place at appropriate times.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7am – 3pm
Late:
12:00 pm – 20:00 pm
Night:
19.45pm – 7.15am

Students are able to participate in the full 24 hour cycle of care including nights, weekends and weekdays. Students are expected to work at least 3 shifts per week alongside named mentor.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Students are able to observe and participate in the complete process of a service user detoxifying from alcohol and/or drugs.
This follows the service users journey through the service in its entirety, from taking referrals from community alcohol and substance misuse services, assessing clients for admission, observing/medicating clients in withdrawal, using assessment tools and clinical interventions when/where necessary and required, reviewing of client care and discharge planning, ITEP group work, one to one keyworking sessions, management of crisis situation, dealing with sensitive issues relating to client circumstances.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Smithfield Service is a nurse led unit which operates in a multi-disciplinary Team Nursing approach to client care. The multi-disciplinary team includes Nursing staff, support workers and psychiatrist
Our aim is to provide a network of support, which enables individuals to develop coping mechanisms giving them the skills in order to achieve more fulfilling lives.
This will take place in an environment that is safe, supportive and as least restricive as possible in order to maximise potential.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Holistic assessment of service users individual needs
- Assessment of withdrawal symptoms using clinical assessment tools (e.g COWS & CIWA Scales)
- Administration of medications and IM injections
- Risk assessment and individual care planning skills
- Communication skills
- Facilitation of ITEP group sessions
- Role and responsibilities of Nurse in charge of shift

We constantly arrange and attend meetings with other charities and agencies to provide possible future clients and also community teams with up to date information on inpatient detox. Currently working alongside other agencies in the Manchester area which gives the opportunity to experience spoke placements.
