About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
- Orientation to the building.
- Discussion about the service.
- You will be given an induction pack, medication questionaire and evaluation form (to be filled in after your final point review).
- Discussion around your learning goals for this placement
- Introduction to the staff team within the first week.
- Facilitation of learning through a wide range of opportunities such as:- Medication management and build of knowledge of medication used in our service
- Build on managing and leadership skills through the management of shifts and delegation skills
- Opportunities to take on some key working responsibilities and build on 1:1 skills
- Opportunities to have teaching sessions or present teaching sessions
- Spoke placement opportunities
- Opportunities to attend service user’s reviews and complete necessary paperwork and present these.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
- You will be allocated a mentor and an associate mentor whilst you are here on placement.
- You will have lots of opportunities to meet with your mentor.
- Your initial, mid and final point reviews will most of the time be booked in advance.
- Opportunities to attend or present teaching sessions.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Early:
7.30 am – 3.30 pm
Late:
1.30 p.m. – 9.30 p.m.
Night:
9.15 p.m. – 7.45 a.m.
Shift Notes:
Long days can be arranged if the student wants to do these (7.30am-9.30pm). The student will need to work 40% of their shifts with their allocated mentor.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- 1:1 session with service users every week.
- Reviews and renewals to service users’s paperwork (risk assessments, recovery star, support plans, MANCAS).
- Dispensing and observing medication, observing for side effects of medication.
- Opportunities to complete 1:1 activities and daily living skills with service users.
- Opportunities to go out with service users either on 1:1 basis or on group activities.
- Opportunities to complete review paperwork and present it to the multi-disciplinary team.
- Observation of mental health and physical health.
- Planning, implementing, reviewing and evaluation the care provided to service users.
- Working with staff and service users in areas or working with psychological formulations, various
- PSI tools including anger management, relapse signatures and self esteem work.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The Recovery model is used at Pendlebury House. It would benefit you to read around this model of care before you come on placement. We also use Recovery Star as a working document so it would also befefit you to read about these.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Medication management, use and effects and side effects, building your knowledge around medications that are used on our service.
- Building on observational skills and subjective writing.
- Communication with service users.
- Service user’s involvement, when it comes to their care.
- Completing paperwork for service users reviews and presenting this to the MDT.
- Follow up anything from this review and implement changes needed.
- Planning, implementing, reviewing and evaluating the care provided to service users.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Injection techniques. Use of various PSI tools.
What resources are available to help students learning?
- Student Induction Pack.
- Student medication questionaire.
- Student medication handbook.
- Resource room with computer access and lots of learning materials such as journals, books and handouts.
- Opportunities to do teaching sessions.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We are currently part of a pilot scheme that are service user led meetings (Tri-sector/regional meetings) where service users from Manchester (Tri-sector) then service users from other regions (Tri-regions) get together and discuss what is currently going on the their service and what we could make better or what service users dont like, what they disagree with. This is to get service users more involved in what is going on within their services.

We will do our best to arrange spokes that are not on the list if they are going to be beneficial to your learning, speak to your mentor.
