About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Student are allocated an assessor and supervisor to work alongside during the placement, student will also be given the opportunity to work with other members of the health visiting team such as community nursery nurses and staff nurses. Students will be provided with a time table to ensure they know which staff they are working alongside each day.

Student will be provided with a student workbook which can be sent out prior to commencement of placement.

Student will be orientated to the workplace, advised of fire exits, toilets and lunch facilities are.

Initial PARE paperwork will be completed within the appropriate time frame.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Student are allocated an assessor and supervisor to work alongside during the placement, student will also be given the opportunity to work with other members of the health visiting team such as community nursery nurses and staff nurses.

The assessor and supervisor will ensure that PARE paperwork is completed.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Core service hours are Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

There is some flexibility, but this must be agreed with the student assessor and supervisor.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Following the healthy child programme students with be able to observe all the core contacts offered

New birth visit

6-8week review

9-12mnth review

2-2.5yr review

In addition to these students will be able to observe targeted contacts such as movement in visits, antenatal contacts and targeted development review. Student may also observed meeting such as early help meetings and cared for children reviews.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Obtaining weights and measurements for patients.

Assessment of development

Delivering health promotion messages such as safe sleep guidance and dental health.

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication is a core part of the health visitor’s role, student will be able to develop the clinical skill of communication.

Breastfeeding and infant feeding is an essential part of the health visitor role, student will be able to develop clinical skills in this area such as assessment of effective feeding.

Parent-infant mental health is a high impact area on the health child programme and student will have the opportunity to observe how this is assessed and how infants and families are supported.

What resources are available to help students learning?

The student handbook contains online learning resources for students to access.

Where appropriate student may be able to untaken study days along side their assessor/supervisor to enrich their learning experience

Leaflets, electronic links and some books are available to support students learning.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Areas of interest and high impact areas from the health child programme will be discussed with the student, students will have the opportunity to look into these areas in more detail and research these further for their own learning and development. Any current research projects within the service will be discussed with students and students will have to opportunity to explore this further.
