About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

On commencement they will meet with their supervisor and be introduced to the placement area

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Supervisors and assessors are allocated prior to the student’s arrival.

Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

Start time can be negotiated with supervisor on commencement of placement. The office is open 8am – 6pm

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Health visitors support families from the antenatal period up to school entry. The service is delivered in a range of settings including families’ own homes, local community or primary care settings.

During your placement you will gain experiences in community health and other connected multi-agency services. You will see clients in both the clinic and home setting and will observe discussion, advice, action and plans of care on a variety of topics, issues and parental concerns. You will observer a wide range of families, parenting styles and home environments. You will see members of the team giving advice regarding a child’s development, health and social environment. There will be times when the focus of discussion and action will be on the parent’s needs.

Health visitors are specialist public health nurses (SCPHN), leading the 0 to 5 element of the Healthy Child Programme

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Child development, assessment and use of tools to aid the assessments such as ASQ

Monitoring growth of babies and children, utilising growth charts

Health promotion

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Multi-professional working to support families at all levels which includes early help, safeguarding at child in need level, child protection level and Cared for children.

Spoke Placements

There is a wide variety of opportunities to work with other professionals and services. For example Speech therapists, physiotherapists, specialised nurses, local children centre staff, pharmacists ect.

Additional Information

The placement is based in a Lift building with both stair and lift access.

There is ample free parking available.

There is a microwave and fridge available for staff if they bring their lunch.

Please note:-  if you have a child in the catchment area of this Health Visiting or School Nursing team you may not be able to attend due to a conflict of interests, please email Angela Mehr in the Clinical Placements Unit asap to clarify.We are also a teaching practice for medical students.
