About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students are encouraged to make contact prior to commencing placement to discuss COVID requirements, start date, shift pattern and expectations. Please wear a uniform.
Local and student induction/orientation will take place on first day where possible, discussion of expectations and prison tour. No Mobiles, electrical items or lighters are permitted on site, only your essential belongings can be brought in to the prison.
Welcome pack/letter will be emailed to the learner with details about security, medications, parking (on site), lunch arrangements (lunch can be brought on site, there are kitchen facilities available, or you can leave the site during your break for lunch).
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are assigned to an assessor and supervisor(s) prior to commencing placement where possible. The Assessor or Supervisor will complete the initial interview during the first week where possible.
Students will primarily work alongside multiple supervisors who will then provide feedback to the assessor.
The Assessor will meet with the student at mid-point and final-point to provide feedback on development.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Monday – Sunday 8:15am – 4:30pm
We are completely flexible with students’ shift requirements.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
We provide both 1-1 and group-based interventions dependent upon need. Most of our input is provided on a 1-1 basis, primarily within a purpose-built mental health unit, though staff do see prisoners on the wings if needed.
Health improvement activities such as screening, Podiatry, chaplaincy, Physiotherapy, Dentist, Opticians, vaccination and lifestyle improvement support are also included within this service.
We have a Psychology Team and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) who also deliver care interventions.

Psychiatrist, Advanced nurse practitioner, counsellor, PWP clinics can be shadowed.
Some time can be spent with both physical health staff and substance misuse team.
We also have the ‘Manchester Made Survivors Trauma Team’ visits.
Triage/screening clinics, single point of access meetings, caseload management, CPA process, ACCT reviews, MH section 48/49 process with MoJ contact and warrant requests.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
We have several research projects – Reception Screening, Clinical TX.

Additional Information
Client Group – Male convicted prisoner over the age of 18.
Due to security issues there is restriction on belongings allowed within the prison:
No electronic equipment (mobile phones, laptops, tablets, flash drives etc
None smoking – no cigarettes, lighters, matches.
No glass or aerosols
Photo id required to be shown at point of entry.
Personal belongings subject to searches and Pat down of staff entering may be required.
Please use the staff car park, which is free and has ample parking access.
